Have you ever noticed a lack of responsibility in your child's behaviour? Is your kid always having an excuse for every missed promise? As parents, one of your main responsibilities is to make sure that your kids are prepared for the real world. There are many activities you can teach your children to help them become responsible for their actions.
As a parent, you are the first person that your child learns anything from. Teaching personal responsibility is a lifelong challenge for you as a parent. There are some easy ways on "how to raise a responsible child" that can start bringing about the change in your kid.
1- Make Your Child Feel Involved
Kids Love helping! When they help, they feel valued. Make the job fun; start with putting their plate on the sink, then into the sink, next move onto then to washing dishes and drying dishes. Your goal is shaping your child who will take pleasure in contributing and taking responsibility of your family's daily routine such as gardening, cleaning, and laundry etc.
2- Praise Effort & Improvement
When you see your kid starts showing accountability, it is important to complement their efforts and focus on things they can improve on. Appreciate your kid’s understanding and sincerity for it.
3- Provide Routine & Structure
Consistent routine will help your child and their "body clocks" with many day-to-day basics such as: time to get ready in the morning, meal-times, bed times, dishes, cleaning and play time. Children who practice these things will be able to better manage their time. They will take pride in knowing what they are supposed to do – and doing it by themselves. As they age, they will have more self-discipline.
4- Let Them Fix Their Own Mistakes
If your child is having trouble with something, let them handle the situation themselves and try to come out with solutions. It is important for children to learn the values of their actions. Discuss with them what happened and how & why to improve next time.
5- Participation in Sports
Play based learning provides children the opportunity to develop communication and social skills. Sports are great for learning things like: Failure and success, teamwork, sportsmanship. Choose the type of sport that will most help your child to grow as a person.
6- Make Responsibility a Priority
As a parent, you need to meet your own responsibilities consistently and make sure that your children understand that fulfilling responsibilities should always be a priority. As a parent, when you tell your child you are going to do something, it becomes your responsibility to do it. For ex:
If your child asks "where are you going?" say: I'm going to work, that's my responsibility. The idea is that you are modeling the right behavior. Be the example.
How a Montessori Education shapes your Children
Montessori Childcare is a different method of education that focuses on children’s development. The Montessori classroom is a nourishing place for kids. There are children from different age, backgrounds who participate in various activities in classes. The Montessori environment is child-centered. In a kindergarten, learning is determined by child’s natural stage of development. Children progress at their own pace. Children develop best in a caring environment where they are allowed to express themselves. In the Montessori environment, children have the freedom (within limits) to choose their own activities. As your children learn and grow as an individual, they will also develop confidence and courage to engage with others. Montessori environment encourage and foster children interaction with their peers. Among the daily activities children engage in at a Montessori are:
- Greeting others
- Saying please and thank you
- A good listener and speaker
Knowing your child is the first and most important step to figuring out. Teaching kids can be tough; it takes time, patience and skills. But once they get it, life becomes easier for everyone! A great benefit of enrolling your kids in a childcare centre or preschool that practices the Montessori method is that it encourage such skill development by actively helping children.
